Terra Morta: Peace - Prologue

01/30/09

Fri Jan 30, 2009, 8:14 PM
Not much has happened today. Wrote a huge politically charged rebuttal to an article written by one Margaret Wente in the Globe and Mail. Of course, she will probably never read it, since its in a facebook note, but it was good writing practice. Nothing like a harsh critique of mediocre and biased journalist to jump-start your brain.

It was just about the CUPE 3903 strike in Toronto.

Right now I'm listening to some awesome new tunes, and I don't feel tired anymore. When I have good music, I can stay up all night if I wish. The proper music gets the creative juices flowing, and the ideas just come flowing.

Wow its been a while since I've written a journal entry.

Right now I'm writing the first chapter of a new story I'm writing called Terra Morta... even though thats not very new, but the direction I'm taking it in is new. There are several main characters, and so far I've partially introduced Blake Drapeta, a Kore soldier from 28th century Earth (the story takes place thousands of years into the future), and John Maynard, a security executive in the employ of Galactic Security Corporation and contracted to Detrin Corporation. There will be other characters to come, but the one closest to entering the story is a female assassin/mercenary, whose name I haven't thought of yet. It will come to me in time.

This is meant to be a very tragic story, that has its own philosophical and socio-political influences. This is a mix between a gore-punk/space opera/dystopic tale. Its meant to be scary, depressing, and thought provoking in the roles played and the stories told by each character. I could guess you could say the story line is most closely anchored by Blake Drapeta, a Kore soldier (soldiers infected with the Kore virus, a creation of the AI 'Mother' which is intended to work in conjunction with an implant network to regulate the human body in a way so that a person can live forever [providing they eat and don't suffer any massive tissue damage, like being pancaked by a steamroller]). Blake is malfunctioning, and is always searching for someone he used to know but can't remember. Kore soldiers only receive pleasure from violence, but Blake is unfortunate in respect to how he is able to reason that what he does is wrong, so any of the few things which can bring him a reprieve from a tormented existence are 'bitter sweet'. He's on a journey to find Mother, and get her to 'fix' him... whether so he can enjoy his depraved existence to the fullest, or so he can fully feel and think in the ways he did before the Kore Augmentation, no one knows (seriously, I'm writing this and from my point of view its really ambiguous in itself because of the nature of Blake's character and his dilemma). He doesn't feel fear, but due to being able to think in ways his old Kore counterparts could not, he is able to reflect on the past and feel regret.

He's a thing with no past he can remember, and no prospective future which cannot be fraught with anything other than violence and suffering. Whenever his implants fail to regulate his emotions and sensory input, and he is lucky enough to feel something close to genuine happiness (a very rare occassion), the implants simply omit the memory from his brain (this is a sci-fi, so save yourself the trouble of explaining the implausibility of that idea).

I guess you could say that Blake is the tragic hero, in that his existence is a tragedy, which is still reflected by mindkind thousands of years later (its a really fucked up story).

Oh and I've already got a few other related stories posted which talk about these things, so for all plagiarists and thieves, get lost.
